The bi-weekly news bulletins, which played in cinemas across the country from 1910, kept the nation informed during two world wars, the great depression and in to the swinging sixties before the advent of colour television marked the end of this great Brithish service in 1970.

The site is full of news reports and information films and is a must-see for all History Buffs, young and old wanting to find out what life was like in the last centry in the Waterside area and beyond.

The site includes 90,000 web pages and 3,500 hours of video clips.

British Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell launched the new site in London after funding was made available from the Lottery`s New Opportunities Fund.

"National lottery good cause funding has enabled British Pathe to bring about this world first, both in terms of technical achievement and in bringing 20th Century newsreel to the small screen of Internet users of all ages," Ms Jowell said.

Why not follow these links to view a list of films for Calshot, Fawley, Hythe and Marchwood For example, view early footage of Sir Christopher Cockerill’s experiments on the hovercraft, the opening of the Fawley Refinery by the then Prime Minister, Mr Atlee, or marvel at the flying boats in the Schneider Trophy race of 1931.
