Hythe Promenade could be home to a sweeping boardwalk, attractive gardens and an impressive amphitheatre, along with a new flying link to Hythe’s historic pier.

These are just some of the proposals being put forward for the redevelopment of Hythe Promenade, which are being unveiled to the public next week (Tuesday, November 19).

Under the plans, the new look promenade will provide space for car parking, colourful landscaped gardens and amphitheatre-style seating for watching public events, all of which will have clear views across Southampton Water.

The timber boardwalk will be suspended over the water and will be accessible to wheelchair users via rampways, while a pedestrian bridge will link the promenade to Hythe Pier and ferries into Southampton.

“These proposals are designed to create an attractive and lively waterfront at Hythe,” said Councillor Tom Russell, portfolio holder for Economy and Planning.

“The development will be a focus for the village, appealing to residents and bringing in visitors, as well as providing easier access for commuters travelling into Southampton by ferry.

Of course, it will also be aesthetically pleasing, reflecting the character of the village and using colours and materials that blend with the existing landscape.”

A manned exhibition will be on show at the council offices, The Grove in Hythe on Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 November, when members of the public will be able to view the plans, ask questions and express their views.

The exhibition will remain in-situ, unmanned, until 29 November. From next week, the plans can also be viewed on the website www.nfdc.gov.uk and visitors will be invited to download a questionnaire and send it in.
